Installation

There are various ways to fit your floor, depending on the material chosen and the brand of the product. Visit our Installation & Maintenance page for specific information.

For best results visually, it is advised to lay flooring running away from the room’s main light source. Overall though, there is no correct or incorrect way, it’s best to lay it in the direction that you prefer.

It is not necessary to install the floor beneath the units, just up to the edges of the furniture and appliances is fine. This will prevent the floor from buckling and be more cost effective and less time consuming.

Firstly, prepare the surface, removing existing materials, nails and staples and sanding down the surface.Measure the risers on all four sides and cut the flooring to size before gluing into place. Next, measure the treads on all four sides, cut the flooring to size and glue securely into place.

Scratches and dents to the surface to an oiled wood floor can be dulled by applying a little more oil. For more significant damage, sanding down and re-oiling the surface is also an option. For lacquered finishes, the same rules apply.

For dull, scratch vinyl floors, a floor stripper can remove the existing finish. Reapply two fresh coats of finish to bring your luxury vinyl floor back to life.

General

Although the two materials have similarities, the main differences are in who the boards are installed. Most luxury vinyl tiles are glued straight down, unlike with laminate. Most laminates are not water resistant unless they are specifically waterproof, so may be unsuitable for rooms like the kitchen and the bathroom.

This may depend on your preferred style of flooring. Glue-down tiles are design-friendly but loose lay and click system luxury vinyl tiles are easy to fit and can be more forgiving if there are discrepancies in the subfloor.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. They look the same once laid but the construction of the boards is different. Engineered wood floors can be fitted in most rooms, including humid areas, unlike with solid wood flooring which can be prone to warping

Think about the size of the space, how much natural light it gets and what look you want to achieve overall. Make sure your chosen floor is made from a suitable material for the space and that it can be fitted with underfloor heating if this is important to you. Consider how you will install the floor and how easy it might be to maintain too.

Your home will be at a different temperature and humidity to the place where the floor has been stored, so before it is laid it may expand and contract slightly. This simply means leaving the flooring in the box in the room it is to be fitted in for a couple of days.

Accessories

Used to finish off the stops and improve the overall safety of your staircase, stair nosing also gives a cleaner finish to each step. There are different types of nosing available, depending on the type of flooring you have chosen.

Bridging the gap between two floors, a floor and a door, or the edge of a step, there are different types of trims and t-moulds available to suit your floor.

Underlay is important for maintaining stability across your floor, creating a level base for your new flooring to be installed on top. If you have a concrete subfloor or underfloor heating, you will need an underlay with a damp-proof membrane. Underlay is also useful for reducing sound, particularly important when laying flooring on a first or second floor.
